Veterans Day Committee
Veterans Day 2010 has passed into history and the support we received from the Red Wing community made it an unprecedented success. Some have called this the finest city tribute our veterans have received in their lifetime. I have only lived in Red Wing for 25 years but it eclipses anything I experienced in our fair city.
The Veterans Day Committee had a vision and it took herculean efforts from lots of people to implement. It is our hope that veterans felt honored and our grateful thanks to those who participated. The blood spilled for America by those in service to our country speaks for itself. The casualty reports coming out of Afghanistan, should give us all pause to reflect on their sacrifice. Our efforts fall short of extending the honor and recognition due our armed forces, past, present and yet to come.
Some citizens of Red Wing criticized the aerial salutes fired off of Memorial Bluff during the reveille and retreat ceremonies. We apologize that they and their animals may have been startled. But we do not apologize for the salutes as they were earned by the blood, sweat, tears and lives of our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen. While some may have experienced an inconvenience, consider America's sons and daughters under enemy shelling without complaint.
There are many people to thank for making our recognition concept a reality. I won't mention people by name because there is the fear that someone will be overlooked. Suffice it to say that members of the Veterans Day Committee, numerous volunteers and merchants who sold our buttons are graciously acknowledged.
We set the mark in 2010 for Veterans Day and we challenge others to step up in 2011 and make this a community tradition to honor our veterans.
